We will start the morning with an informative overview of the workshop, our goals, and how the pitch sessions will work. We will briefly discuss the elements of a good pitch and share tips to prepare everyone for their pitches with agents and editors.
7:30am I've Written a Book...What's Next?
Marisa Corvisiero
This session will provide an informative overview about the publishing industry, with a focus on readiness and learning about the various publishing paths available to authors and treating writing as a true business. The discussion will cover how to prepare for publishing, including an overview getting the work ready and perfecting the submission package (query letter, synopsis, and first 10 pages); how each publishing model works, the differences, benefits and drawbacks of publishing independently or with different publishers, and how to diversify these options by using the Hybrid Model to publish faster, increase readership, and earn more income by optimizing the use of resource and opportunities, and making informed business decisions.
8:15am Who Did What? Key Steps to Developing Relatable Characters
Tessa Shaffer
Craft session dedicated entirely to the art of creating relatable and realistic characters that forge a lasting connection with the reader. The key to character formation is in really getting to know your characters. Everyone is different in the world, and they should also be different in your book. Specific personality traits and having a well formed character from appearance to internal conflicts will not only set your characters apart, make them memorable, and hook the reader into following in the character's journey, but it will also help your plot run its course and flow naturally.
9:15am Editing with an Agent's Eye
Andrea Hurst
With over 25 years experience as a literary agent, professional book editor, and bestselling Amazon author, Andrea Hurst offers a behind-the-scenes look at how writers can edit their manuscript from the perspective of an agent. You’ll learn what agents look for when reviewing manuscripts, why having your manuscript as polished as possible is important, and key tips in editing that just may be the edge you need to start getting full requests from agents.
10:15am So an Agent Requested your MS...now what?
Katie Reed
This informative session will help all writers feel more confident in knowing the ins and outs of what comes next. From how to put the final polish on your manuscript, etiquette in sending in your submission and how often to follow-up with an agent who’s reading your work, what to expect as far as next steps, tips on possible scenarios that may arise from R&R’s to “the call”, and what to do if you can't seem to get past the request stage. Q&A with an agent to ask all your burning questions.
Panel
11:15am Critical Mass: Agent and Editor First Page Critique Panel
All participants are encouraged to anonymously submit the first page of their fiction manuscript or memoir (no picture books) for a fun and expertly informative live critique. The panel is comprised of our guest Faculty of experienced Editors from reputable publishing companies and Literary Agents from several different agencies. We will randomly choose about 10 first pages to be critiqued, time permitting. The moderator will read the page out loud and the panelists will ring their gong as soon as they decide that they would have stopped reading the page. When three gongs have been rang, the moderator will then prompt the panelists to discuss their decision and provide constructive criticism.
*May be Replaced with “Bringing Books to the Screens of Every Size” Panel

The Faculty:
Adam Chromy - President and Literary Agent | Moveable Type Management
After receiving a degree in finance and management from N.Y.U.’s Stern School of Business and spending a decade as a sales and marketing specialist for technology startups, Adam Chromy decided to blend his love of narrative with his modern entrepreneurial spirit. The result was Artists and Artisans Inc., where for ten years he represented authors with a professional rigor seldom seen in the book business. After hundreds of published books and dozens of bestsellers, Adam relaunched his company as Movable Type Management to better serve clients by offering them the higher visibility afforded by film and television adaptations of their work. Andrea Hurst - President and Literary Agent | Andrea Hurst Literary Management Andrea works as a literary agent with both bestselling and emerging new authors to help polish their book, obtain publication, increase sales, and build their author brand. Andrea brings over 25 years experience in the publishing industry, including her work as a literary agent. She is also a developmental book editor for publishers and authors, a bestselling Amazon author, an instructor for the MFA creative writing program at the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts, and a webinar presenter for Writer's Digest. As a literary agent, she selectively represents high profile adult nonfiction and well-crafted genre fiction Alexandra Grana - Literary Agent Apprentice | Corvisiero Literary Agency Alex is a recent graduate of the University of Toledo College of Law. She has always loved writing and literature, having completed her B.A. in Professional Writing at Miami University, and is excited to dedicate herself to helping fellow writers pursue publication. When she isn’t reading, she can be found trying a new recipe in the kitchen or prepping for her next DnD session. Alex’s favorite genres are fantasy and horror. She is a sucker for a good magic system, reimagined fairy tales, and poetic prose. Stories by marginalized writers are of particular interest to her. Britny Perilli - Associate Editor | Running Press Britny Perilli (she/they) is an associate editor at Running Press. As a “cross imprint” editor, her focus is on licensed publishing across RP’s Adult, Kids, Studio, and Miniature imprints, but she also works on books for children (non-fiction and YA fiction) and adults (illustrated non-fiction) that explore and celebrate fandom, nerd culture, and the amazing communities that make them up. While all voices are welcome, she is specifically interested in hearing from Black, AAPI, Latine, LGBTQA+, disabled, and other marginalized voices offering their perspectives and work in the areas of pop/geek culture and fandom, and she is prioritizing work by those writers. Specific areas of interest for non-fiction are: video games, tabletop RPGS, anime and manga, beloved/nostalgic IP and brands, genre & foreign film and television, K-dramas, and other geeky spaces and communities. For YA fiction she is looking for: contemporary, upbeat, entertaining stories with passionate protagonists with geeky or nerdy hobbies as well as queer or geeky retellings/adaptations of “traditional” stories, tropes, or media. You can learn more about her wishes on manuscriptwishlist.com. Catherine Ross, Esq. - Literary Agent Apprentice | Corvisiero Literary Agency Catherine is a recent graduate of Howard University School of Law. Always knowing that her love of books would somehow find its way into her career, Catherine strived to learn about publishing and copyrights law. Along the way, she fell in love with agency work as well. Catherine hopes to bridge both legal and agent services together to serve clients at each stage of the process, and is excited to learn more from Corvisiero. Catherine loves anything from the fantasy genre, from urban to high fantasy, young adult to new adult, she’ll read it all! But honestly she loves anything that has strong world-building, complex characters, and a twist. When Catherine is not reading (a rarity) she is likely watching old horror films or finding new places to travel. Maggie Sadler - Associate Literary Agent | Corvisiero Literary Agency After five years of literary scholarship, Maggie Sadler is motivated to apply her knowledge of literature and craft to the industry as an Associate Agent at Corvisiero Literary Agency. Maggie earned her joint degree in Comparative Literature and English in 2016 from the University of St Andrews, a historical university tucked away in a tiny windswept Scottish town along the North Sea. A sea sprite at heart, Maggie returned to the North Atlantic coast to earn her Master’s in Literary Studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2019. The intricate, vivid, and deep-rooted folk traditions Maggie encountered in both Scotland and Newfoundland further enriched her literary interest in folklore, mainly the seafaring lore intrinsic to small North Atlantic communities. After these unexpected adventures, Maggie now calls rural Michigan home, where she daydreams amongst the wildflowers with her rascally horse. She is currently working on a novel of her own, full of wild coasts, mysterious sea chests, and feral girls with monstrous secrets. Located in Seattle, WA, you can find her hiking or running in the rain when she is not indoors reading with her trusty cat at her side. In both film and novels, she is interested in YA contemporary stories that deal with messy relationships and issues that can help young adults put words to their experiences. She is also looking for YA science fiction and urban fantasy that provide an escape while still helping us connect to the everyday troubles of growing up. In adult fiction, she loves women’s fiction and upmarket fiction that deals with burdensome secrets, messy relationships, and a character with a deep desire to change their life, the world etc., especially with a psychological, sci-fi, or romantic twist!
